On April 27, 2022, the National Council of the Slovak Republic (parliament) approved new regulations in the area of land-use planning and development, namely the Land-use Planning Act and the Building Act. These new laws will replace the current Act No. 50/1976 Coll. on Land-use Planning and Building Code (the Building Act).

According to the explanatory memorandum, the aim of the new legislation is to professionalize the state administration in the area of development, reduce the administrative burden of development-related activities, streamline the building approval process, especially provide for electronic processes and data digitization relating to land-use planning and development.

The activities of building authorities will no longer be carried out by municipalities, but by the state. The building approval process will be managed centrally by the newly established central state administration body (Office for Land-use Planning and Development of the Slovak Republic).

The Acts will become effective on April 1, 2024, instead of the originally proposed date of January 1, 2023.
